Tis the season for pain free shopping feet…

mainTis the season for pain free shopping feet

The holidays have officially begun!  Although the next month will be festive and fun it can be tough on the feet. Hours of shopping, standing in long checkout lines, baking, attending parties, and traveling to visit friends and relatives can take their toll on your feet.  Wearing non-sensible footwear such as flip-flops and fashionable boots while hitting the mall for those special deals on gifts can lead to tired and cranky feet.

main1Keep in mind that, after long periods of standing and walking in the mall, your feet may swell.  Support hose help with swelling and will put some spring back in your legs.  Alternate standing and sitting for a few minutes, when possible. Take a short little break to relieve pressure off your feet. Diabetics, in particular, should check their feet for blisters or sores halfway through the shopping day.

Avoid wearing ballet flats or flip-flops that offer little arch support. Consider bringing 2 pairs of shoes while shopping and switch them halfway in the day to use different muscles and to relieve different pressure points. You can find affordable comfortable shoe brands at Payless and Kohl’ that feature wider a wider toe-box, extra stretchy fabric, and shock-absorbing soles.

main2Check that the shoe is the right shape for your foot, with good flexibility and cushioning.

At the end of a long shopping day, stretch and flex your toes with controlled movements. Consider soaking your feet in a luke-warm Epsom salt bath. Massage by rolling your feet over a golf or tennis ball.
