What is the hottest exercise craze right now? Zumba. It’s a high energy aerobic workout that seems more like a fun dance party than a regular boring exercise routine. Twelve million people worldwide now do this cardio-dance.   By combining nonstop upbeat Latin dance steps you’ll be burning easily up to 500 calories in an hour.

For the Zumba enthusiast, shoes should be the most important article of clothing.   The ideal shoes for Zumba are cushioned, provide the ability for side to side motion and give you the chance to change directions as soon as the beat changes.  Sonya Chavez, a Zumba instructor at  Sebring’s  Golds Gym recommends light fitted shoes with a good arch support for the dancing  movements in  her class.  She says you will get addicted to this fun and high energy class.

Without the proper shoes, the four most common Zumba-induced foot problems seen by a foot doctor include:

  • Plantar fasciitis – Heel and arch pain are caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of connective tissue that runs on the bottom of the foot.
  • Neuromas Painful burning, tingling, or numbness in the front of your foot, usually between the 3rd and 4th toes, is caused by thickening and enlargement of a nerve in the foot, caused by too much pressure on the toes and the balls of your feet.
  • Achilles tendonitis – Pain caused by inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which is where the calf muscle attaches to the heel bone.
  • Stress fractures –A broken bone sometimes referred to as a “hairline fracture,” are caused by a cracked bone in the foot, such as the heel or metatarsals.  These are due to overuse or repetitive stress.
