Plantar Fascial tear: Pau Gasol out of the game

Will the Lakers reach the playoffs now that Pau Gasol is out of the game?  The Lakers forward-center tore his plantar fascia during the Lakers win over the Brooklyn Nets. Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain.  This flat ligament connects your heel bone to your toes and supports your arch.  Most people have pain when they take their first steps in the morning after sitting for a while

In the majority of people, plantar fasciitis pain can be healed successfully with conservative treatment including night splints, oral anti-inflammatory medication, arch supports, physical therapy, stretching, and icing and cortisone injections. An easy home treatment includes Thera-Band resistance band allows you to stretch the plantar fascia to your comfort level.   The foot roller is massages and stretches the foot and is chilled to provide greater relief.  Biofreeze can be applied throughout the day.

bio-freezeA rupture or tear occurs immediately after strenuous activity placing this basketball player on the sidelines since recovery time is 6-8 weeks.

An MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) is performed to diagnose the rupture.   Bruising and swelling appear in the plantar arch of the foot. Gasol related hearing a “pop” noise at the time of his injury. In a sense, the tear Gasol suffered was like nature’s own surgery, releasing the tight inflamed ligament.  Once the traumatic pain and swelling are gone, the pressure on the plantar fascia will be relieved.

The injured person typically requires healing in a walking boot called a camwalker for 6-8 weeks.  Additionally, a “PRP” procedure also helps with healing by using the person’s own blood and spinning it in a centrifuge.  The concentrated platelets are extracted and re-injected into the painful area.  The growth factors produce cells necessary for healing. With proper rest and rehab Pau Gasol will eventually be back in the game but will he return as a Laker or be traded?
